On Thursday, I was outside on supervision (ie. yard duty) at lunchtime, when a boy came running up to me asking if I'd seen the spider. I admit to a momentary sense of fear, but then ran after him to check out the spider, on its glorious big web stretching between the branches of a tree in the Mortlock playground. When the bell rang, I brought the kids to the park instead of the classroom, and we had a great discussion about golden orb spiders, and various other creatures that I'd never encountered before. This conversation led to some of the kids digging up a witchetty grub (or at least something closely resembling it--one of the kids claims it was a different species, after doing some further research). We cuddled it for a bit, but it soon became a snack for some of the kids! (I declined, pleading my case as a vegetarian.) Check out the video for all the gruesome details. And today, we went around the back of our building to take a photo with our saltbush branches before composting them...another golden orb was awaiting us, this one nice and low so we could get a great view of it: so gorgeous!

Some of our students made this video for our Year 3-7 assembly focused on the Expert Learner Quality of Communication. Enjoy! On Tuesday, February 7, our Year 6 kids had a great day at West Lakes Aquatic Centre. I was lucky enough to join them (while the Year 5 students stayed with Mrs. Frances at school), and enjoyed watching them rotate in groups through four stations throughout the day: sailing, canoeing, kayaking, and surfing. They also learned about water safety...ask your child to tell you the meaning of some of the acronyms they learned about that day (such as WETT). Probably the best thing about the day was the perfect weather: a truly lovely day, just before this heat wave! |
